To Office-goers: What is your workplace ecosystem like?

Funny Bulldo Seated | Worklife

This question is relevant for anyone who does not have the luxury of working from home – something that I, personally, don't count as a blessing, as some folks make us believe. Working from home has totally different dynamics. The reason lies in the office culture, the infrastructure, the people fueling daily interactions, and the type of decision-makers that are found at every contemporary workplace. Closing in on the question – what really is a good workplace environment? Does the presence of a great snack stand or awesome lattes throughout the day mean you are privileged as an employee? There is limited help out there if you want to evaluate your organizational culture; most information found online is often heavily manipulated. The answers have to come from you and me...

Figure Out Your Workplace Category: Defining Workspaces

Does the freedom to chat throughout the day or text on your phone mean invaluable liberties? I believe that there are no parameters in this regard, as personal preferences can be very different. Some people might love the structure that comes with office life, while others might despise the sense of control or decorum the workplace tries to create for maximum productivity. Please comment, sharing what your office is like—the love-hate relationship is understandable, but overall, how is it treating you?

My categorization for office spaces is:

  • Plain ugly: the aesthetics are absent, but functionally, things work. The walls might seem too banal, but every laptop works at blazing speed, and the volumes keep coming in
  • Has Potential: carries some serious promise of getting better all the time, but rarely delivers, and still, you cannot hate it because it looks so full of promise!
  • Legacy space: has too much history, some adorable, the rest overwhelming and boring
  • Progressive: puts a premium on the quality of work done
  • Mutually beneficial: provides the best work-life balance
  • Pain-in-the-arse: overwhelmed by petty policies and politics
  • Stopover: serves as a filler until employees find a new, better job
  • Un-introspective: too much of a chicken to take a reality-check
  • Women-oriented: suffers from estrogen overload. All men are hated here. There is zero tolerance for boyfriends, husbands, brothers, fathers, and especially male bosses
  • Women despos: too many male employees, eager for some eye candy. Cesspool of perversity
  • Wastefully inclined: don't optimize/recycle resources, waste without realizing the pit they are digging. These offices are a nightmare if you are ecologically righteous
  • Cluttered: too many things stacked in each corner of the office floor, and each cabin looks like it was overwhelmed by an ocean of missed deadlines
  • Lounging hubs: less work / more sleep aura. Employees seated like folks folded out in front of the TV
  • Themed corners: bigger workplaces with expansive surface areas have the luxury of including chatting corners, lost in love nooks, and small spots where people can continuously feel the need to stand by their device while it gets charged
  • Monk silent: these are not workplaces but sanctuaries aimed at people who want to recuperate physically and mentally, perhaps spiritually too!

Updated on January 8, 2018:
We have brought in an indoor plant to try and enliven the surroundings. Cannot do much about the existing decor, the drab wall paint, but we can add some green splash in the form of a Croton, a small plant that is quite dexterous, able to survive indoors and outdoors. Just today, I got a small water sprayer to ensure the leaves are kept greener.

Updated on January 29, 2018: We have been hopeful about getting a new workspace. Today, we came closer to realizing this, visiting the site that is being prepared just a few feet away from our current dwelling. Though the work has just started, the hopes are up. We are betting on more ventilation, more body maneuvering space, better washrooms, and conference halls that can genuinely host a team meeting. Our expectations are small and very real. Nothing too fancy and somewhat optimistic...this pretty much sums up my small, lovable team!

Updated on April 4, 2018: The work pressure is getting to them. I don't have immediate solutions as a Manager, though; ideally, I should have at least a couple. This is the real time, that phase, when the performers and the shirkers will drift apart. My unintentional, and non-broody, disassociation from team activities/interactions is perhaps bringing them together. This is my first impression after last week saw strenuous work schedules and some projects becoming too tight for our comfort. I wish I could share this article about teamwork dynamics, but right now, it is better for them to realize a few things on their own. I stand apart a bit, trying to understand the psychology at work.

Updated on October 17, 2018: The current scenario is closer to what I have always wanted. A small bunch that knows about teamwork, a small pool of people I can trust. Yes, there will always be differences of opinion and sometimes, the ego clashes will spiral out of control, but these days, I am better at understanding the dynamics of working with a predominantly female team, and they, in turn, comprehend my expectations a lot better. A couple of them now seem to have more clarity about the fact that increasing expectations, praise, adulation, and some scrutiny mix-up as a part of team culture when you are in it for the long run. They seem to realize that friction is not about hating someone but a natural byproduct of different individuals sharing the shade of the same umbrella.

DIY Anxiety Management: Need that Morning Sense of Calmness

Funn Rabbit Busy Management
There is one challenge that has been constantly biting me – the inability to dress up in a calm, relaxed manner when getting ready for the daily drive that leads me to the office. Why? I am a self-confessed, highly embraced, chronic anxiety sufferer, and despite my best efforts, the smallest of changes in plans for the day, from a minor change of breakfast menu to running any small errand that might surface at the last moment, I tend to get a bit agitated. During winters, this feeling is somewhat controlled as I don't sweat as much but during summers, the feeling can be excruciatingly bothersome. To explain this better, I will need to divulge more details about my morning routine too, and the stickiness of it that is also a bit of a challenge. The thing is that I need a few minutes of working in the morning to get in the right frame of mind and soldier up for the day to follow. This is not about gaining muscle or fitting into a muscle tee. This is just a means to an end, as it helps me prepare mentally for things that might bother me and those that have already been marked as problems to solve. Whether I am expected to be a peacemaker or a troubleshooter at home or the office, the morning workout helps me be better at it. But working out comes with another challenge - the sweating and the time it takes to snap out of the exercising mode.

Feasibility Analysis for Project Manager: are you doing it?

Funny Pic Girl Managing Stress
I have become a hands-on project manager, not by intent or professional training, but as a result of gradual progression at my workplace. However, there are some PMP or project management basics that I have inculcated specifically to ensure that I can better map and manage my projects. For instance, feasibility analysis has a lot more to do with the overall relevance of landing a project rather than just the costing. Some projects have an identifiable starting and termination point – you are aware whether this is an ongoing collaboration or a one-time affair.

Evaluating Project Feasibility: Scope & Skill Set Reality

Now, based on this simple analysis, you need to do a check on how a proposed project can be fitted within the current workload of your team – this feasibility parameter, based on project doability, is not about profit or the number of dollars earned as pure profit, it is about whether a project can be done within the time-frame the client expects and by using the current pool of resources you have – you might earn something out of it but the feasibility is also about a project not overwhelming your team leader, manager or other teammates.

At my current workplace, the feasibility of a proposed project is based on:

- profitability
- ability to make things work with the current, available resources
- ability to conform to the deadline
- ensuring sufficient resource availability in view of planned leaves across the team
- checking QC bandwidth
- ensuring the project does not clash with the highest priority projects
- permissions to allow landslide OTs that random projects often demand

DIY Project Management beyond the basics [a little bit of stress is not that bad if you can recognize "right amount of stress"]

How Emotionally Intelligent People Use Little Stress to Optimize Performance
- checking the planned leave calendar as you want your selected, best-matched resources for certain types of projects
- if the same client has been working with another team in the department, catch up and set up a familiar mode of communication for more preparedness
- able to set up client handling for high-quality projects with multiple stakeholders who might need communication beyond working hours
- for projects that have substantial digital footprints, it might be necessary to ensure that the project outcomes are readily shared on client-owned platforms, from PRs to social media channels
- you might be tackling undefined goals. Are you ready for this? Is there room to ramp up the resource bandwidth without any notice?
- if there are milestone payments, how to handle client requests for making lump-sum payments, and are receiving initial payments on a milestone basis
- freedom to change instructions for the team when some sub-processes become redundant
- sharing plans with the client about the unrealized business value of data generated as a part of the project. Ideally, there should be a presentation for it
- ensuring minimal fragmentation of outcomes, emphasizing that complete sets of allocated tasks are finished systematically, rather than running and submitting work with on-hold sub-sets
- trying a new resource in the project management or project communication role is not a sin as long as the resource has had some dry runs in the lead up to the actual project

The Jaundice Battles: Liver Recovery, Managing Symptoms

Sad Dog Image - Illness Jaundice
Recently, about 3.5 weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Hepatitis A. Turns out, I was never vaccinated for this medical condition. Though Jaundice sounds like a very regular disease, non-fatal and easy to combat, the reality is quite different. The fact remains that Jaundice takes a toll on your liver. This invariably means a lesser ability to metabolize or digest food. The body is unable to holistically remove its toxic overheads, and the result is a culmination of many health conditions.

Farhan Akhtar: too dexterous to believe?

Farhan Seems to be Deviating from his Directorial Skills
The guy is seriously talented, almost too good to be human. I am talking about Farhan Akhtar. He has a chiseled physique that would make Stallone proud. Plus, he directs, acts, dances and sings. Add to this, he is also good at story-boarding and doing the screenplay for movies directed by him or by his sister, who is supposed to be equally skilled. I wonder what kind of a genetic mix these guys inherited. Born to a father like Javed Akhtar and their immediate environment consisting of someone as holistically talented like Shabana Azmi does make a difference I guess. However, I would like to say that just being born to talented parents does not mean you are going to be as good. You have to make up your mind and go through the grind!! … this was a good rhyme, wasn’t it?

Gastric Health Upkeep: Using the Enigma called Isabgol

Using Isabgol for IBS, Constipation, Improving Gut Health
Say aloud the word and you can bet on all the heads in the room turning towards you as if you shouted something unholy. However, try the same thing in a patient waiting room where you have diabetics, those diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and folks fighting away the flab, and Isabgol immediately seems something most people can relate with! There is a trick to using Isabgol and you have to be a bit patient since the concoctions take some time to work their magic. Sharing My Gastric Management Strategies - this is what I have learned from my experiences:

- Mixing Isabgol with curd: the best remedy if you have IBS, acidity or the stool movement seems to be lazy. This is not for those diagnosed with chronic constipation. This Isabgol blend helps to add more fiber to the intestinal pathways, helping to add bulk to your stools. Try this if you want that feeling of accomplishment as you lift your proud-self from the toilet seat

Trying to Breathe-In, Hold and Then, Exhale the Anxiety Out of ME

Breathe Better Anxiety Help
If you have visited this blog a couple of times, it would have been apparent by now that I am a unique blend of being a hypochondriac, serial assumer, and unnecessarily honest. Each of these traits, combined with my ability to shunt out any human interaction that does not seem important, leads to a widening space for feeling anxious. I have been in and out of gym sessions and yoga classes to help me unwind better, stop the overthinking, and get more realistic about life.

Allergy to prescription medicines? Read This...

Image of Herpes Help | Dicussing Health
2017 has been a bit overwhelming, with nearly four instances of a full-blown allergic reaction on the face. This seemed like a herpes breakout and I was using multiple anti-virals for this at one point. Subsequent medical investigation yielded the fact that the breakouts were closer to and more likely to happen again when using certain medications. The trick, as I have realized, after a lot of suffering, lies in finding out the possible factors and then creating layers of self-defense, where you want to avoid the possible allergens, especially when you are already suffering from some disease or a temporary condition like the flu.

Sofit Soy Milk Review: Good not Great with Limited Future

soy milk versus cow milk digestive tolerance imageI wasn’t too happy about the idea of trying soy milk. The reason was simple – my milk consumption is already abysmal. I have it in the form of curds and minimally milk-infused shakes. The latter is due to my disposition caused by years of struggle with IBS – this condition made me almost lactose intolerant. As a result, there has been this inclination of trying alternatives. This is how I reached Sofit Soy Milk. Seated on a shelf at a nearby mall, this product was somewhat tested before. I had tasted the sample, but it was a bit too flavored to ascertain the real flavor. I don’t like anything that is dairy and too sweet. Even chocolates or ice cream should be moderately sweet. The choice was natural. I had to buy the No-Sugar-Added variety of Sofit Soy and try it with some DIY combinations…
Vegan Dukan Shares:
Soy milk is presented as a protein-rich plant-based alternative to dairy, with commercial varieties often fortified with calcium and vitamins D, B2 and B12. The resource gives an approximate nutritional profile of 26 calories, 2.4 grams of protein, 1.6 grams of fat, 0.5 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of fibre per 100 ml, while noting that sweetened or flavoured versions can contain more sugar and carbohydrates. Five potential benefits are highlighted: supporting cholesterol management, skin health, hair growth, bone health and mood. The discussion also addresses common concerns about soy, including claims that it causes breast cancer, feminises men or disrupts thyroid function. It argues that available human evidence does not support these broad claims, while noting that people taking synthetic thyroid medication may need to consider the timing of soy consumption because of possible effects on absorption. Soy milk is also compared with cow’s milk for calories, protein, calcium and environmental impact. The resource concludes that soy milk can be a nutritious dairy alternative, except for people with soy allergies.

First impressions of Sofit Soy Milk

There is nothing wrong with the product. It is better tasting than its contemporaries, I guess. However, the no-sugar variety means that the blandness of soy gets a boost. The result is a rather UN-tasty, and not distasteful, glass of something close to being a milkshake replacement. I bet nobody can have it in its packaged format, particularly when served chilled. At room temperature, the bland taste is somewhat kept in check. I combined this with more dedicated online searching to find reasons for drinking soy milk. Pro-soy milk discussions were few. I moved on and tried various combinations of Sofit Soy Milk for better feedback:
  • With some fiber-rich, brown-colored sugar – blends rather well…recommended for its earthy, almost rural taste. Takes away any sense of sophistication in the soy drink you are having. This type of sugar also adds more fibrous nature to every sip. Not recommended if you like your soy milk shake very refined and without various textures
  • With cornflakes – a decent combination, but you will miss the conventional taste of dairy milk. This milk actually takes more time to wet and penetrate the surface of flakes. Not the best bet if you want that typical dairy-ness in your cereal bowl.
  • With some honey – a recommended combo, easy to mix the honey and does not overwhelm the taste buds. Honey blends rather well with soy milk and does a great job of being a healthier sweetener. Just ensure that you don't add too much, as the original flavor might be eliminated.
  • With nothing, i.e., standalone – you can drink some when eating something sweet or spicy. I have also consumed Sofit with bites of dark chocolate. These combinations work rather well and don't spoil or bump up the taste of the drink. These are for you to try and decide which one works best for you.

Overall Sentiments about Packed Soy Milk

how soy milk can harm human health

  • If you are seriously lactose intolerant, soy milk makes a lot of sense. It gives you protein and supplements the lack of dairy in your diet.
  • If you are modestly lactose intolerant, like me, you can use soy milk off and on. I don’t think anyone can have it regularly.
  • If you are not lactose intolerant but want to cut out the dairy fat, try soy milk with a pinch of sugar or some sweet cornflakes.

Equally Important - how about making packed soy milk a greener choice?

Try to recycle the empty carton for something. sliced the top using it as a temporary bin, which I later dumped into the bigger dustbin. What do I save from this? Using plastic polythene carriers, which are an environmental hazard! This is easy DIY work and makes you an instantly greener consumer!

Cleveland Clinic Shares:
Soy milk is a plant-based, dairy-free drink made from soybeans and water and stands out among milk alternatives for its relatively strong nutritional profile. One cup of unsweetened soy milk typically provides about 8 grams of complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids, along with nutrients such as potassium, phosphorus, magnesium and folate. Fortified varieties can also provide useful amounts of calcium and vitamin D, making them a practical dairy substitute. Soy milk is naturally low in saturated fat, and its isoflavones — plant compounds sometimes called phytoestrogens — are being studied for possible benefits related to inflammation, healthy aging and menopausal health. Current evidence does not support the common idea that soy foods increase breast cancer risk for most people. Choosing unsweetened varieties is generally preferable because flavoured versions may contain substantial added sugar. People with soy allergies should avoid it, while those taking certain medications, including some thyroid medicines and blood thinners, may need to discuss timing or intake with a healthcare professional.
Nutrition Source Shares:
Soy is a nutrient-dense legume and a complete source of protein, providing all nine essential amino acids along with nutrients such as fiber, B vitamins, potassium and magnesium. Its distinctive feature is its high concentration of isoflavones, plant compounds that can have weak estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effects depending on factors such as hormone levels, the type of soy consumed and the individual. Research on soy and health has produced mixed findings, making broad claims difficult. Population studies generally suggest that soy has neutral or potentially beneficial effects on several health outcomes, particularly when it replaces red or processed meat. Evidence for reducing menopausal hot flashes remains inconsistent, while research on breast and prostate cancer has produced promising but not definitive findings. Human studies of soy and cognitive function are also mixed. Soy foods include whole soybeans, edamame, tofu, tempeh, miso and soy milk, with nutritional profiles varying considerably between products. Overall, ordinary soy foods are considered a nutrient-rich part of a balanced diet, while the effects of concentrated supplements and isolated isoflavones may differ.
Healthline Shares:
Soy milk is made by blending soaked soybeans with water and straining the mixture into a smooth, milk-like drink. Unsweetened varieties may contain little more than soybeans and water, while commercial products can include salt, added vitamins and minerals, oils, flavourings, sweeteners and thickeners or stabilisers such as locust bean gum, gellan gum or carrageenan. Nutritionally, one cup of unsweetened soy milk provides about 80 calories, 7 grams of protein and 4 grams each of fat and carbohydrates. Many products are fortified with calcium and vitamins such as A, B12 and D. Soy milk may also support cholesterol and blood-pressure management, reduce certain markers of inflammation and provide a low-calorie source of high-quality protein. However, sweetened versions can contain significant added sugar. Concerns about ingredients such as carrageenan remain controversial, although food-grade carrageenan is considered safe by major food-safety authorities. Overall, choosing an unsweetened, fortified variety can provide a nutritious dairy alternative.
HealthXchange Shares:
Soy milk and cow’s milk can both provide useful protein and calcium, but their nutritional profiles differ. Soy is naturally plant-based, cholesterol-free and generally lower in saturated fat, while its protein content can be comparable to dairy milk. Cow’s milk naturally provides more calcium and contains nutrients such as vitamin B12 and vitamin D, although commercially produced soy milk is often fortified to provide similar amounts of these nutrients. The choice is therefore not simply a matter of one being universally better. For people concerned about cholesterol, soy products may be useful as part of a diet low in saturated fat. People with gout do not necessarily need to avoid soy altogether, as soy foods contain moderate rather than high amounts of purine and can generally be consumed in moderation. For people undergoing cancer treatment, both soy and dairy can contribute valuable protein and energy. The resource also notes that ordinary soy foods have not been shown to increase breast cancer risk, while concentrated soy supplements warrant greater caution because evidence about their effects is less certain.

Is Junooniyat watchable?...ummmmm...HELL NO!

Junooniyat review indian ott content
What translates into Obsession is actually referred to as a "2016 romantic Indian Bollywood film" on Wikipedia, but spend 20 minutes with the content, and you will agree that there is very little the director seems to be obsessed with apart from trying to stretch a story. Actually, the story is not bad, but the eventual dish that is served is sprinkled with mediocre songs and poorly imagined background music and a plot let loose in such a way that you question whether this was worthy of spending your money - I did not spend any as I saw the 2016 movie on a TV channel. Pulkit Samrat isn't that bad, but when the story is as fragmented as India's socio-economic policies, with nobody bothering to hold it together, you cannot blame the guy for seeming so weirdly positioned. Pulkit does not look like the leading man in the movie and still occupies considerable screen time. His pairing with Yami Gautam was spoken about by my friend,s and I had heard the same on FM Delhi statio,ns but she fails miserably as a lady who would self-annihilate if she does not get her man. The music shows no impact. The lyrics seem OK, but when the vocals of singers who have not paid their dues gym-style, you cannot connect with it - that also sums up the impact the movie made on me - just could not join the dots, let alone walk the dotted line!

Reviewing Junooniyat for No Apparent Reason - Just Proves My Dumbass Credentials

This movie needed a cast that could portray the obsession that is love, like a disease that takes over your mind. This intensity is missing; in fact, it seems to have been totally ignored. The supporting cast does not try to add humor, which is good in a way, but we could have used some breaks from Pulkit looking like a Yash Raj Films hero even as he serves and protects the nation. Yami tries too hard in places to cry and force you to believe that she is a damsel who can slit her wrists if love enchanted is taken away. Does she fit the bill? Not really. Yami looks beautiful but does not convince you. Pulkit seems too restrained, as if afraid of acting too much,h which in turn might expose anything he is trying to hide. His performance is passive in a way, while Yami seems intent on being the enforcer. The story idles a bit too much after the first 30 minutes. There is some lost momentum regained as the marriage party-crashing cast meets the American Desi types. The closing minutes again don't rekindle that the hero and his lady yearn for each other - they seem to have given a good performance, but then this alone has never really helped a movie make money, has it?

Old World Zit Buster that Still Works: Mycoderm, Siloderm

Image talks about anti-pimple tools that most people don't know
Most of you might already know this – Iodine is one of the most effective topical medicines. You can use it for a wide array of skin problems, including serious gnashes, scraping, tissue damage, etc. However, one utility that is seldom discussed is that it is useful for handling those plan-ruining zits that pop out every now and then. I have used it as an overnight application, and the results are rather good. You can use it and step outside since most iodine ointments have this yellowish coloration that is quite strong. The one I use is called Cipladine, and it is very easily available. You don’t need a prescription for it. Just dab it on the ugliness called pimples and leave it overnight. The next day, the inflammation would have reduced remarkably, and the head of the zit might be fully mature for the ultimate pop and clean routine. Don’t use too much of this medication since it is mainly meant for wounds and not acne treatment.

Pain Lies in the Mind of the Beholder: Your Pain Can Be An Emotional Manager

Image of Using Pain as Motivation
This can be a bit tricky to describe and might seem absolutely non-sensible, so please bear with me for a moment. I believe in categorizing life and things that fill-up my wife to manage life. This includes pain, anxiety and grief too. I vouch for pain often being an integral part of helping us live better. I call this subtle pain and though it might seem just a memory to some of you, it plays a very active role in moderating our decisions and behavior. For instance, the subtle pain you experience every time you start a new gymming regimen reminds you that all those times you stopped, to restart again, meant that you would have to go through the initial, conditioning soreness.
